<p>I&#8217;m only looking for input about SEVERE depression that hasn&#8217;t responded to any traditional methods of treatment. Is there any relief possible?  I am 21 years old and I&#8217;ve lived with these problems all my life and I don&#8217;t wish to continue to do so.<br />
I thought I was clear about what I had asked for, but after reading some answers I think it&#8217;s necessary to add some details, because many of these answers have no relevance to what I have asked.</p>
<p>I did not ask about your feelings towards religion or God.  Furthermore, the quote  &#8220;If you know God you will never be depressed&#8221; is downright offensive.  That same person also seems to think I&#8217;m &#8220;allowing&#8221; myself to drown in gloom and that I&#8217;m not trying to help myself ??  Preach to someone else.</p>
<p>Another individual was arrogant enough to suggest that I am &#8220;choosing&#8221; to cling to my depression for drugs or some other reason.  Depression is a medical condition, not a conscious decision.  I certainly didn&#8217;t wake up one day and CHOOSE this lifestyle!</p>
<p>I&#8217;m a male, and I have already seen several psychiatrists and taken many rx drugs, after all, I did ask about treatment RESISTANT depression.  I don&#8217;t have bipolar.</p>

I have been on several websites so I can understand this condition, which does give some relief.<br />
But I really just want to find out from other people about what symptoms they get and how they have dealt with it?<br />

<p>Just to clarify my history i was on xanax and requested to be off of it.  Thus i recieved lorazopam. </p>

However, for most patients of post traumatic stress, generalized anxiety disorder or similar mental disorders, other streams of treatment like cognitive therapy and psychotherapy are mainly used, with medications resorted to only sparingly. Anxiety medications have severe long term effects and hence the physicians prefer to use them only during acute distress phases of the patients as stop-gap treatments to effect immediate relief from distressing symptoms.<br/><br/>The importance of medications<br/><br/>While it is very essential to look out for long term effects these anxiety medications have, their use is justified in patients undergoing severe phases of anxiety disorders and they are the only means of controlling the patients&#8217; symptoms quickly.<br/><br/>Acute anxiety immediately responds to drugs like Valium and Xanax. For example, patients undergoing severe episodes of anxiety will get relief from the symptoms within maximum two hours. <p>I have an issue with taking medication. Any medication (whether it&#8217;s prescription or over-the-counter). When I take it, I find that I&#8217;m frequently having panic attacks, fearing that I may be doing some sort of serious damage to my body.</p>
<p>I have been to the doctor for check-ups to make sure that everything is fine, and it is. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with me, and I know this fear is all in my head, I just don&#8217;t know how to make it go away. I&#8217;m not begging for relief, and it&#8217;s not sending me to the border of insanity, but it is fairly uncomfortable when the panic attacks happen.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d just like to know what it&#8217;s called, what might cause it, and what are some ways to at least make it bearable until I can see a psychologist? I appreciate all the help. You must be disciplined to notice the positive things in your life and not just perceived negative things, even if things seem completely bleak at the present time. You need to constantly reinforce your own self worth and if you do you will see many of your anxiety issues fade away. Make a list of your positive attributes, anything you like about yourself, be honest, and keep them on hand for times of low self-esteem and anxiety.<br/><br/>Be kind to yourself. Its o.k. to make mistakes, cause that&#8217;s how we learn. All too often fears, guilt or shame will play themselves out in our mind. Think of anxiety like a little person saying negative/anxious things in one ear and then running around to the other ear and telling you how bad you are for believing those things. Guilt and shame are another way that your thought patterns, which thrive on pain, survive. It is crucially important to cut yourself some major slack, especially at times like these. Be positive about yourself. Sooner or later you will realise that you have greater control over your mind and thoughts than might now seem to be the case. Step by step your going to take control of your mind, of your thought patterns. Your going to take control away from the negative thoughts that you&#8217;ve been feeding your mind.<br/><br/>Think of your mind for a moment like a judge making decisions, would you want him/her to hear only one side of the case before making a decision? You can&#8217;t expect to make a rational decision about something that is worrying you when your brain receives, and re-receives again, the worst case scenario. Of course along the road to recovery time and time again you will want to resort back to your old worrying habit, because that&#8217;s what your used to.<br/><br/>Worry is nothing more than a bad habit which you&#8217;ve developed over the course of many years. But did you worry like you do now when you were a child? Probably not, and if you did you learnt it early on, worry is a trained response. You have trained your brain to do it and now it&#8217;s stuck on that setting. Your brain learnt this from you. You will need to break this worry habit if you want to be happy again. Be patient, and persistent with it, you will break this habit if you start now to think more positively.<br/><br/>Have you ever noticed how one day your worried about one thing seemingly monumental to yourself and as soon as that worry is over with it is replaced by another new worry even more monumental to yourself; and the other worry seems to lose it&#8217;s significance and so on and so on, worry after worry, as long as your brain has something to worry about! Isn&#8217;t that a fact, as long as your brain has something to worry about. In other words, its not what your worrying about that is the issue, in fact, rather, its your worry habit which clutches onto anything it can grab a hold of to worry about, and then it magnifies every conceivable negative variable that could possibly go wrong; this is a learnt response, and it only causes more worry, making the situation worse, and blowing your fear out of proportion. Here&#8217;s how it works: you find something to worry about, worry about it, become fixated on it, blow it out of proportion, find something else &#8220;more pressing&#8221; to worry about, worry about that, look for more possible negative scenarios surrounding it, blow it out of proportion&#8230; and so on; constantly feeding into this worry habit. <p>And about meds, I know they don&#8217;t cure or make everything all better, but do they really take the edge off? Obviously, I know that ativan and the other benzos are great for temporary relief during panic, but what about long term treatments like antidepressants? Any good?</p>
<p>I feel like, no I know, that because of my anxiety, I can barely function and if it weren&#8217;t for my fiance, I wouldn&#8217;t be functioning at all.<br />
